COVID-19 has changed the way we deal with everyday life, especially our first responders, especially volunteer fire departments. Donald Macdonald chief of the Port Hawkesbury fire department said he has seen fewer volunteers wanting to join the fire department. Macdonald also adds in house fundraisers have also hurt them, most partially bingo fundraisers. he says “it has been hit or miss when we can put them on”.
Macdonald says he has been lucky to have a few volunteers to join the organization as of late and says when the COVID-19 numbers come down he expects volunteers will come back and he can spend more time training those new members.
