Nova Scotia may have hit the peak of new COVID-19 infections in the current wave of the virus according to health officials.
This week’s data report shows an average of 1,072 new cases over seven days ending April 18th.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shelley Deeks says there is still a lot of virus out there.
“This has been the largest wave so far, even at the peak we’re getting a large number of cases daily but it tends to be at least another month before we start seeing a nice sharp decrease.”
There were 13 deaths over the last week and 84 new hospital admissions.
Deeks says while cases are high, we aren’t seeing as many severe outcomes as previous waves.
“Now we have a population that has been highly vaccinated and we have quite a few Nova Scotians that have already been infected.”
She defended the decision to continue on with few restrictions, adding the situation is different because of vaccines and those with prior infections.
