After celebrating 64 years of giving back to their community, the Rotary Club of Port Hawkesbury has come to an end.
Their best-known achievements include donating bursaries for high school students, fundraising for polio, helping out individuals and barbequing hot dogs at the Canada Day celebration.
Former President Patrick Lamey tells us that he has mixed emotions about the club closing its doors.
“When you were part of a group of like-minded people that we’re all kind of focused regularly on wanting to do good, you notice it missing for sure, and there was lots of camaraderie there,” he remarks.
Lamey says there’s now a real gap in his life, but he will always look for ways to take action and help, just like the club inspired him to do.
Despite lots of efforts to attract and retain new members, long-term members were no longer able to participate due to their health or their age.
The former President is still optimistic a new club could be started in the future.
“Just because our particular version of the Rotary Club of Port Hawkesbury has come to sort of like a natural dignified stopping point, I just wanted to kind of just sort of put it out there to the universe that you only need 15 people,” stated Lamey
He says they tried their best and this may be exactly what needed to happen for a whole new crop of people to start a brand-new club out of the ashes.
