A lot has happened in 2025 for the Municipality of the District of Guysborough according to Warden Paul Long.
The highlights he shared include the maritime launch, new wind energies, a sustainable fuels project, the upcoming gold mine and more housing.
Long wants to be ready for opportunity of more people to be living in Guysborough and have the infrastructure in place to allow people to want to stay.
“We want to see people coming and living in the area and feeling part of the community. We’ve worked hard at making our municipality more accessible, more open, more diverse,” he said.
“We’re seeing a lot of different people moving in from various parts of the world here. Our door’s open and we want people to feel part of the community.”
Ways of enticing people to come and move to the area include a new fitness centre and a daycare going into a school, both in the Canso area.
He says 12 units were built for people who work in healthcare.
“Having a gold mine in your backyard is a great opportunity [and] is something that we’re very excited about as well,” expressed Long.
“When you think about it a small place like Guysborough having the sustainable fuels project here that’s going to be helping other places around the world, it really allows you to know that everything is interconnected [and] that you’re never too small to play a role in the whole world environmental situation.”
He also shared that he wished the drought did not happen, but it allowed them to ensure emergency measures are in place and ready for the future.
“At the end of the day, our job is as counsellors to make life better for people that are live within the municipality,” said Long.
He says they really take their time to make sure that things that are going on, including community benefit agreements from different development companies, to make sure that they’re giving the best bang for the buck to the residents in the area.
