Two Via Rail trains will not be operating as usual on Wednesday after a collision in Quebec.
In a statement to our newsroom, the media relations team for Via Rail says the routes that run between Montreal and Halifax are cancelled and there will not be any alternative transportation provided.
It was Monday around 1:30 a.m. local time, when a passenger train hit two transport trucks parked close to the tracks in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska.
The train was evacuated, and 114 passengers were taken to City Hall where they were fed and given shelter.
A train heading to Montreal was also impacted with 106 on board.
There were no injuries, however, the two front locomotives and multiple rail cars were damaged and derailed, according to a statement from the Transportation and Safety Board of Canada.
The CN Police Service and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are investigating.
“We are currently gathering information and assessing the circumstances to determine whether a full investigation will be launched,” the board wrote in a statement.
Via Rail says service is expected to resume Friday and passengers will be compensated according to company policy.
