An uptick in fake Canadian currency has police warning Nova Scotian’s to be careful when accepting cash.
So far, there have been eight separate reports of high-quality counterfeit $50 bills being used in the last month to purchase goods and services in Colchester, East Hants, West Hants, and Lunenburg.
Police say the money looks and feels like real bills, but the fake ones have a holographic sticker that can be peeled off.
Nova Scotian’s are encouraged to contact their nearest local police to make a report or exchange counterfeit currency.
However, Cpl. Mitch Thompson says, “If you unknowingly accept counterfeit cash as legal tender, you can’t be reimbursed; you’re on the hook for the loss. Being familiar with the security features of genuine bank notes will help you spot counterfeits at a glance, protecting yourself from fraud.”
