The deputy mayor of the Town of Antigonish says they’re getting closer to establishing a new skate park in the town.
Members of the Heatherton Community Centre’s board of directors passed a motion to deny the use of a parcel of their land for a skateboard park in December; proponents shifted their focus to another location in the town.
After February’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Dianne Roberts, Antigonish’s deputy mayor, said it’s been a long time coming.
“It has been 24 years when I served on the skateboard committee- we had an association and a small skateboard park, and after that I think there was a couple more,” she said. “I’m very pleased to think that, maybe in the very near future, this is going to be a reality.”
Jeff Lawrence, the town’s chief administrative officer, said negotiations with a land owner for a 25-year lease agreement are taking place, but he can’t share the location at this point, only that it is within town limits.
He said the park could be in place by 2019 or 2020.
