Officials at StFX say construction of the Mulroney Institute of Government is coming along well.
Andrew Beckett, the university’s vice-president of finance and administration, says construction disrupted classrooms early on, but everyone was accommodating and patient.
He says it’s at the heart of the campus, both in terms of location and the purpose of the building.
Beckett tells The Hawk they’re excited for new opportunities once construction is finished.
“That will really open up spaces for our students, in terms of areas that they can congregate and gather for studying purposes or social interactions,” he says. “It will become, I think, very highly utilized, (a) key building for us on campus.”
Beckett says the project, which costs roughly $49 million and is expected to open in May or June 2019, remains on time and on budget.
He says progress is very visible to anyone on campus.
“The steel work on the building is certainly getting to a point of nearing completion,” he said. “You can see the form of the building now quite well, and over the summer months there will be a lot of brick work, and then the interior work (will get) started as well.”
Beckett says they’re also starting renovations to Nicholson Tower during the summer.
