The former finance director of the Coady International Institute is scheduled to make his first court appearance in his fraud case.
RCMP say they received a complaint regarding fraud at the Coady in July.
James Edward Marlow, 53, of Lower South River, who was fired from the university in July, has been accused of misappropriating close to $250,000.
Officers arrested Marlow in September; he faces charges of theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and criminal breach of trust.
He was released on conditions; he’s expected for arraignment in Antigonish Provincial Court.
Marlow is accused of creating fake invoices from suppliers, requisitioning cheques from StFX for those invoices, and putting the cheques into his personal account, which constitutes misappropriation of funds, theft and fraud.
University officials filed a lawsuit against Marlow in August; they’re asking for punitive and aggravated damages, as well as interest and legal costs.
They say they reviewed their internal financial management processes to ensure future integrity and security, and their review found no other irregularities, so they’re confident the matter was isolated.
