The newly re-elected chief of the Paq’tnkek First Nation in Antigonish Co. says he’s looking forward to a very similar council.
There’s only have one new addition to the council table- Tma Francis was elected as one of the councillors in band elections Friday.
Paul Prosper, the chief of Paq’tnkek, says there are a number of things he wants to work on, including the highway interchange project, improvements on the gym and developing a political election code.
Prosper tells The Hawk he wants a possible change down the road.
“What I’m hoping is that this custom election code will give an opportunity for community to select leadership and potentially have, as my replacement, at least for this first five-year term, a woman chief.”
Prosper says the custom election code could be implemented next term following community discussion and dialogue.
He says the return of most councillors gives them confidence because the core stayed the same.
“Myself, council and staff have been digging over the last two years,” he says. “It’s a bit of validation in terms of their recognition and support.”
15 names were on the ballot for council positions.
