
The StFX men’s hockey team opens the AUS playoffs on the road.
The X-Men travel to New Brunswick to meet the Moncton Blue Eagles in the opening game of their best-of-three, first-round series.
StFX (12-13-5), who finished the regular season with one win in their last five, ended up fifth in the seven-team conference with 29 points, three points behind fourth-place Moncton (13-11-6), who had a slight 3-2 edge in the five-game season series between the teams.
Game time is 7 p.m.
The winner of Wednesday night’s game will have a chance to sweep the quarterfinal series when it shifts to Antigonish for game two Friday night.
The StFX basketball teams host Saint Mary’s in AUS action.
The X-Men (10-7), with wins in four of their last five, are second in the eight-team conference with 32 points, 14 points behind Dalhousie for top spot, and two points ahead of third-place UNB; the Huskies (9-8) are fourth with 26 points.
The X-Women (3-14), losers of seven of their last eight and already eliminated from playoff contention, are seventh in their eight-team conference with six points, 14 points behind the Huskies (8-9) for sixth, and two points up on last-place Dalhousie.
Saint Mary’s has won the first two games between both the men’s and women’s teams; it’s the first half of a home-and-home series, with the teams squaring off again in Halifax Saturday night.
The women get underway at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.
The Cape Breton Eagles open the second half of their six-game road trip in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
They visit the Val-d’Or Foreurs.
The Eagles (33-15-3), with wins in back-to-back games and nine of the last 10, are fourth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 69 points, four points behind Rimouski for third, and 10 points ahead of fifth-place Charlottetown; the Foreurs (22-22-7) are tied with Victoriaville for fifth in the eight-team Western Conference with 51 points.
It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Val-d’Or won the first 2-1 in Sydney in October.
Game time is 8 p.m.
Cape Breton plays for the second time in as many nights when they visit Rouyn-Noranda Thursday night.
