Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton
The newly re-elected mayor of the Town of Port Hawkesbury says she’s excited for the next term.
Brenda Chisholm-Beaton defeated Archie MacLachlan, her challenger, with 59 per cent of the vote in Saturday’s municipal election.
After, Chisholm-Beaton told The Hawk she’s ready to get to work with the rest of the council members.
“We are going to roll up our sleeves and work our hardest on projects that we will be focusing on and prioritizing from 2020 to 2024- I know housing and the waterfront are two key ones,” she said. “I think it’s going to be an exciting term, and I’m really up for the challenge.”
Incumbents Blaine MacQuarrie, Hughie MacDougall and Mark MacIver were all re-elected; newcomer Jason Aucoin joins them at the council table.
Chisholm-Beaton said she’s pleased by the number of women elected in the region.
She said a recent women’s leadership school has paid dividends.
“I’m very excited to hear that there will be new female faces at the council table, leading our strait region, and leading Cape Breton and Unama’ki,” she said. “It just makes my heart excited.”
Three of four Mulgrave town council seats are now held by women- the re-elected Tanya Snow and two new faces in Crystal Durling and Krista Luddington.
Two women were elected in Richmond Co.– Melanie Sampson and Amanda Mombourquette- as part of an entirely new council.
Three of the six councillors in Inverness Co.– Bonny MacIsaac, Lynn Chisholm and Catherine Gillis.
