The case of a man from Pictou Co. who pleaded not guilty in relation to a fatal crash that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter from Antigonish has been adjourned.
RCMP say a transport truck veered into the oncoming lane of Hwy. 104 in Barney’s River Station and hit a Pontiac G6 in Oct. 2019; Helen Sampson, 74, and Eva Sampson, 51, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Devon Michael Dewtie, 21, of Trenton faces two counts of criminal negligence causing death; he entered not guilty pleas in Aug. 2020.
His trial took place in Pictou Provincial Court in July; a verdict was expected Thursday, but the hearing was adjourned until Monday.
Police say a mattress flew off the roof of his car and ended up on the road, which caused the driver of the transport truck to lose control and hit the victims’ vehicle.
Dewtie, who was arrested without incident at a home in Greenwood the day after the crash, was released on conditions following his first appearance in the case shortly after the crash.
