There is a big demand to have a plebiscite vote for the proposed consolidation of the Town and County of Antigonish.
The CAO of the Municipality of the County of Antigonish outlined the rules of a plebiscite vote during last night’s committee of the whole meeting. Warden Owen McCarron says if a plebiscite vote were to be held it would have to be set up like a municipal election with polling stations and every district would need to have returning officers. Such a vote would cost the municipality $103.000. McCarron feels that enough residents were consulted during the public engagement sessions on the proposed consolidation.
A petition calling for a plebiscite vote for the proposed consolidation of the Town and County of Antigonish was set to be brought up at last night’s council meeting for the county but due to irregularities it was not put on the meeting’s agenda. Municipal staff are reviewing the petition and council does plan to look the document later.
The petition was first brought to the table by councilor Harris Mcnamara at the previous committee of the whole meeting.
