The Canadian Red Cross has opened a temporary office for residents of Pictou and surrounding counties that may qualify for financial aid programs relating to damage from Hurricane Fiona. One program provides a one-time payment of $1000 per eligible household for people ordered out of their homes in the aftermath of the storm, or who cannot return to their homes due to storm damage. The other program funded by Red Cross donors provides $500 to eligible households that are unable to meet basic needs due to storm damage and they reside in Antigonish, Cape Breton, Colchester, Guysborough, Inverness, Pictou, Richmond or Victoria Counties.
The only people that need to visit the Red Cross team in Pictou are those that have been contacted and asked to go there or those unable to register online or by phone Starting today, a Red Cross team will be set up at the DeCoste Centre for the Arts and Creativity at 99 Water Street in Pictou, they will be there from noon until 6PM on weekdays and from 10AM until 4PM on Weekends. You must bring a government issued photo ID or a tax bill that shows your current name and address.
To date, the Red Cross organization has registered more than 79.000 homes in affected provinces and put 11 million dollars towards 32,000 eligible households. They also provided shelter to more the 1200 people and gave over 5700 emergency items to people in need. 240 Red Cross personal were mobilized to support the emergency response to the hurricane.
