An information meeting for the Strait Richmond Hospital was held last night. The event was planned to provide the general public with information on the completion of the Ruth Shannon Ambulatory Care Unit. The multi-million-dollar project was made possible with donations from Ruth Shannon’s family, Nova Scotia Health, the Strait Richmond Healthcare Foundation, and other corporate donations.
“We’ve expanded parts of the ER and added additional rooms, we have more room now,” says Strait Richmond Healthcare Foundation Fundraising Coordinator Aurine Richard. “This is a hospital that is needed in our community very much because when we have closures, St Martha’s and Sydney Regional are probably overwhelmed and we want to assure the public that this small hospital is going to get bigger and better.”
The event was also arranged to give people an update on renovations to the hospital and to give residents an opportunity to ask questions or bring up concerns. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Ruth Shannon Ambulatory Care Unit was also planned for last night before the public meeting.
The meeting was well attended and about 60 people showed up. Some had questions about the shortage of healthcare workers and what the foundation was doing to address this problem. The hospital is expected to gain more healthcare workers and more details on these workers will be announced in the near future.
