Black bears may be sleeping for the winter, but the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables for Nova Scotia is still committed to reducing conflicts between people and bears.
The departments current approach to managing bears prioritizes public safety.
As part of their research and to help with future wildlife polices in the province, they are investigating other jurisdictions that have spring bear hunts as well as other wildlife management strategies.
There has been some interest from Nova Scotia hunters to have a spring bear hunt in order to control the bear population.
According to a statement from the department, any future decisions on bear management will be based on sustainable and ethical management of black bears and the consideration of minimizing human wildlife contact.
