Cape Breton-Canso MP Mike Kelloway issued a statement regarding the withdrawn amendments to Bill C-21 that would have prohibited some hunting and sport rifles. An amendment put in place to ensure public safety.
To strengthen the ban on assault weapons, the amendments would have put more firearms in the assault style category but the implications it could have had on responsible gun owners was not considered.
Kelloway has heard from many constituents across Cape Breton-Canso who had concerns over these proposed amendments and worked hard to make sure that their voices were heard in Ottawa.
He stated that the withdrawal of the amendments shows that the government understands that for many Canadians hunting is not only a pastime but a way of life and that they respect hunters and responsible gun owners, he was happy to see Public Safety Canada work with members of all political parties and responsible gun owners to get this right.
Kelloway says assault style firearms were banned because they have no place in our communities.
