A local eatery on Lower Water Street has made a prestigious list.
Drift, which is connected to the Muir hotel, is #57 on the list of Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants. Freeland Hospitality owns Drift, as well as Cafe Lunette, which ranked #74 and also locked a #5 spot on the Best New Restaurants List. Freeland’s Peacock Wine and Bar also came #9 in that category.
The list is made by restaurant industry insiders and food critics.
Chef Lawrence Deneau of Drift told Huddle, “It personally wells me up. I’ve been a chef in Nova Scotia for quite a few years now. To be recognized in that top 100 list in Canada, and to be able to use ingredients and forage items… in Nova Scotia has been incredible.”
It has a menu that celebrates local food including it’s special dish Nova Scotia Hodgepodge with lobster, shrimp and haddock. They also serve Atlantic salmon, Newfoundland cod au gratin, halibut and steamed PEI mussels. They even use a special ingredient…seaweed….to make more of a splash in the trendy cooking environment.
“We’ve used it in a lot of different ways. We dry it, we pickle it, and then make it into peppers and add it to spice mixtures. And each seaweed has a different flavor and salinity and a different depth.”
Chef Deneau says the staff are goal-driven, work-focused and very grateful for the recognition.
The restaurant opened in 2021.
