The mayor of Port Hawkesbury is extending deepest condolences on behalf of Town Council, to the Filipino community after the heartbreaking tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver.
“This celebration, which honours courage, heritage and the indomitable Filipino spirit, was marred by sorrow and our hearts go out to all who are grieving the loss of life and those who have been injured,” says “Brenda Chisholm-Beaton.
The statement goes on to say, Port Hawkesbury is “proud” to be a home to a “vibrant” and “deeply valued” Filipino Canadian community.
“We stand in solidarity with you during this painful time. Let us honour those affected by coming together in compassion, remembrance and a renewed commitment to safety in our shared cultural celebrations.”
Eleven people between the ages of 5 and 65 years old were killed after a man drove an SUV into a crowd, Saturday.
A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene after bystanders helped to detain him.
He is now facing eight charges of second-degree murder.
