Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
This marks their first official discussion after Carney’s election victory last Monday secured his position as prime minister.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
Ahead of the talks, Trump has said that he is ‘not sure’ what Carney wants to discuss, making the agenda somewhat unclear.
However, trade and economic policies—including the proposed movie tariff—are expected to be key topics given the ongoing disputes between the two nations.
Trump recently posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he’s proposing a 100 per cent tariff on foreign-made movies, arguing that overseas incentives are pulling productions away from Hollywood.
The Canadian Media Producers Association has warned that such a move could significantly impact Canada’s film industry, prompting the group to brief Carney on the potential consequences.
Carney’s visit to Washington is seen as a crucial step in navigating Canada-U.S. relations, particularly as both countries prepare for potential renegotiations of trade agreements in the coming year.
