His Honour The Honourable Mike Savage, ONS, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, annually presents the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal to selected Grade 11 students who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in the school and community and commendable performance in the courses in which they are enrolled.
The presentations took place during a ceremony held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre on Tuesday, May 6.

Grayer James Parsons
Grayer is a dedicated student leader and advocate with a strong commitment to the French language, school and broader community. He has been actively involved in Student Council and various advisory councils, working to support student initiatives and promote inclusivity. As a member of the Central Inverness Community Health Board and Saint Margaret’s Parish, Grayer has contributed to local decision-making and community service efforts.
Beyond school and community work, Grayer has also played a key role in provincial leadership initiatives, focusing on accessibility, cultural exchange and youth engagement. His efforts in fundraising, mentorship and event planning have helped strengthen organizations including United for Literacy and the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association.
With a passion for service and a drive to create positive change, Grayer continues to advocate for others while maintaining a strong academic record. His leadership and dedication positively impact the initiatives he joins. Congratulations, Grayer!
Elsie-May Deborah Pyke
Elsie-May is an outstanding French Immersion student who is known for her academic excellence and diverse creative talents. Deeply involved in drama, she has taken on acting, backstage management, casting, recruiting and set design, bringing productions to life from both sides of the curtain. Elsie-May’s passion for the arts extends to music, as she performs in school concerts, and the local Lilith Fair concert.
Beyond the arts, Elsie-May is a member of the Senior Girls Soccer team and an ambassador with the Nova Scotia International Student Program, supporting international students and fostering the sharing of cultural diversity and experiences. She has also participated in Celtic Colours, embracing and contributing to Scottish cultural traditions. Through Co-operative Education placements and her work with her family’s business, Elsie-May has gained valuable experience, paving the way for an exciting future of creativity, culture and language beyond high school. Suki Kamogawa
Suki has consistently excelled academically throughout her life, earning recognition as the top student in her class for several consecutive years. She applies the same strong work ethic to her involvement in school groups, such as the School Advisory Council and Student Council, as well as to various community organizations. Having volunteered since the age of seven, Suki has progressively expanded her range of interests and contributions. Her volunteer work includes, but is not limited to, managing the local art gallery for ArtWorks East and serving as co-chair of the Guysborough Community Health Board. In addition to her school and volunteer commitments, Suki also balances part-time employment.
Suki is an inquisitive and diligent individual, committed to putting forth her best effort in everything she does. Her dedication makes her an exemplary recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal as she embodies the very qualities it represents. Congratulations, Suki!
Brenna Thelma MacPherson
Brenna puts academics first, taking pride in the quality of her work and her achievement. She is a member of the Student Council and is active in creating and organizing school events. She has attended the Techsploration alumni conference, is a youth facilitator for the Healthy Relationships for Youth Program, and has participated in softball, volleyball and soccer.
Brenna has been working after school and full-time during the summer since the age of 14, demonstrating her strong sense of responsibility, friendliness and work ethic. She volunteers each summer at local sporting and community events and is a member of the Community Health Board. Brenna has been a highland dancer since the age of 4, taking weekly lessons, competing, performing at community events, and coaching younger students. She has completed highland dance theory exams and is working on her teaching qualification level. Congratulations, Brenna!
Dalbrae Academy
Beth Clara Gail Tubman
Beth is a conscientious and motivated student who makes meaningful contributions to both her school and community. Her leadership at Dalbrae Academy includes facilitating the Healthy Relationships for Youth Program and participating in regional and national Science Fairs. Beth also serves as an International Student Ambassador and is actively involved in Techsploration, the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association (NSSSA) and various school clubs and committees. Beyond her school contributions, Beth is a dedicated volunteer, offering her time to Celtic Colours, the Whycocomagh Summer Festival, and other local initiatives, including serving aboard the tall ship St. Lawrence II. Beth effectively balances academic excellence with a strong commitment to community well-being through her diverse pursuits. Congratulations, Beth!
Elise Cecilia Munro
Elise is a dedicated, diligent and multifaceted student. She has a strong passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which has led her to achieve multiple awards at the National Science Fair and compete in the National Brain Bee. A versatile athlete, Elise excels in basketball, soccer, badminton and is an active member of the cross-country team. Proud of her roots in Mabou, she is committed to giving back to her community, regularly volunteering at various local events. In her spare time, Elise enjoys hiking, mountain biking, and reading a good book with a cup of tea. Congratulations, Elise!
Dr. John Hugh GillisRegional High School
Wafeeqa Ahmed
Wafeeqa is an ambitious and multi-talented student currently pursuing an International Baccalaureate Diploma at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School. With exceptional interpersonal and technical skills, including expertise in Python coding, robotics, and public speaking, she has demonstrated her commitment to academic excellence and leadership.
Wafeeqa is an active member of her school community, serving on the Student Council and engaging international students as an ambassador. Passionate about innovation, she has launched her own YouTube channel, Boundless Fusion, to share educational scientific content for young learners. Wafeeqa’s involvement spans from robotics competitions to programs like Model UN and Techsploration, where she explores emerging technologies and empowers young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Beyond academics, Wafeeqa teaches piano, volunteers at a local nursing home, and plays varsity volleyball. Her dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including leadership and science fair awards. Congratulations, Wafeeqa!
Isla Isabelle Margaret Corkum
Isla is a dedicated and community-focused student currently excelling in the International Baccalaureate Certificate program. Isla’s passion for leadership shines through her involvement in Girl Guides of Canada, where she serves on the Nova Scotia Provincial Youth Forum and has developed initiatives like a Diversity and Inclusivity proposal. She is the creator of She Swims Strong, a program empowering woman in swimming through mental and physical health support.
As an academic achiever, Isla has garnered accolades such as the Bronze Excellence Award at the Canada Wide Science Fair and the Lieutenant Governor’s Respectful Citizenship Award. Her extracurricular pursuits include competitive swimming, dance, and volunteering in community-focused activities like sensory swim sessions and beach cleanups. A confident public speaker and debater, Isla has represented Nova Scotia at Alberta Girls’ Parliament. Ivy DeCoste
Ivy is a strong academic student, earning multiple awards for excellence in math and science while balancing academics and part-time employment. She actively contributes to her school community. In leadership class, Ivy helped organize games for younger students, and as a Student Council member, she assisted with fundraisers, events, and dances. As a senior volleyball player, she mentors junior athletes. Beyond school, Ivy participates in community cleanups believing in the importance of community connection. Kate Morrow
Kate is a dedicated student, athlete, and community member who strives for balance in all aspects of life. She has maintained a strong academic average while actively participating in school and volunteer activities. In her community, Kate has supported younger children through sports, prepared meals for homeless shelters, raised funds for Ronald McDonald House and volunteered at local events. Within her school, Kate has been a committed athlete, playing soccer, softball, basketball and volleyball, and has earned many awards for these sports. Bria Elizabeth Horne
Bria is a dedicated student who excels both in and out of the classroom. She is the co-president of Student Council, a member of the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association (NSSSA), and a member of the school’s Uplift Committee. In addition to her academic achievements, she is a key player on the school’s Volleyball Team, balancing her athletic commitments with her studies. Bria consistently maintains impressive academic achievement, demonstrating her ability to manage her time effectively while pursuing her passions. Brooklyn Elizabeth Hanhams
Brooklyn’s desire to succeed academically and her passion for volunteering encompasses the perfect balance of academic excellence and social responsibility. She not only excels in her studies, and consistently achieves top marks, but also dedicates her time and energy to helping others in her community. Whether volunteering at the local fire department or the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Brooklyn demonstrates a commitment to making a positive impact beyond the classroom. Angus MacKay
Angus has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and athletic accomplishments. He earned gold academic standing in Grades 9 and 10, holding the highest average in his Grade 9 class and the second highest in Grade 10. Angus is an active participant in classes, consistently striving to extend his learning and understanding. His communication skills are exemplary, and he excels in both writing and critical thinking. Angus’ extracurricular involvement includes serving as a class representative for Student Council and a presenter at the annual Lilith Fair concert. As a dedicated athlete, Angus has been a member of the school’s Track and Field, Basketball and Volleyball teams, and he served as co-captain of the Senior Boys’ Basketball Team. He played in a Unified Sport basketball game and helped with fundraisers for the volleyball and basketball teams.
At the school level, Angus has volunteered at the annual Celtic Colours concert, organized fitness breaks for younger students and assisted with the school Breakfast Program. Within the community, he has helped organize events at the Inverary Manor, completed demolition work at the Inverness Arena, maintained the local ballfield, cleaned up the beach boardwalk and volunteered within his church. In addition, Angus demonstrates his responsibility, interpersonal skills, and strong work ethic by working at a local fitness centre. He demonstrates an impressive ability to balance his many commitments while maintaining high personal standards of achievement and a strong community spirit. Congratulations, Angus!
Brea Miller
Brea has combined excellent academic achievement with impressive school, community and athletic involvement. She earned gold academic pins in Grades 9 and 10. Brea works collaboratively with classmates and demonstrates committed engagement in her learning and respect for her school community. Her athletic participation includes soccer, basketball, softball, track and field and horseback riding and volleyball, where she served as co-captain this year. As an athlete, she has consistently demonstrated a positive attitude and good sportsmanship. Brea is a supportive teammate, works hard, and does not give up when faced with challenges. These qualities earned her the School Sport Nova Scotia Good Sports Award in Grade 8. She has also acted as a minor official at school sports events and has volunteered with the Kids’ Run Club and the Fiddlers Run. Brea’s level-headedness, positivity and her leadership qualities also shine in her athletic pursuits.
Brea has volunteered for various school events and programs including the annual Celtic Colours concert, the Breakfast Program and the Healthy Relationships for Youth program, presenting herself with professionalism and personability. She has also volunteered in her community at the Inverness Capers Snowmobile Club, the Reaching Strides Equestrian Centre, the Inverary Manor, the Inverness Arena and as a Youth Elder at her church. Brea’s community spirit, strong work ethic, reliability, willingness to help and friendly demeanor are also demonstrated in her employment at Freeman’s Pharmacy. Congratulations, Brea!

Blake Everett Landry
Blake has excellent leadership qualities, academic dedication, and a commitment to both school and community involvement. He always strives for his best when learning, which has contributed to his academic success. In addition to being an outstanding student, Blake is a natural leader. His leadership style is inclusive, encouraging and inspires his peers. This was important when he worked with his Physical Education Leadership class to organize games and participate in a Unified Sport basketball tournament. Raya Marie Landry
Raya is a well-rounded French immersion student. Raya strives for academic excellence which has earned her high distinction in Grades 9 and 10 all while also supporting her teammates on multiple sports teams including volleyball and softball teams which earned her the Ron O’Flaherty Scholar Athlete Award in 2022. Raya values the learning that takes place with her volunteer opportunities and is passionate about taking on leadership roles within her community. She has devoted many hours as a coach of youth volleyball, a member of the Regional Student Advisory Committee, and has been actively engaged in the school’s leadership committee, the Nova Scotia International Student Ambassador Program, and the IWK fundraising committee. Dylan Troy Hudson
Dylan is a dedicated student who is known for his exceptional work ethic, academics, leadership and outstanding contributions at both the school and community level. As a quiet leader, Dylan consistently demonstrates empathy which earns him the respect of both peers and staff. He is always ready to lend a helping hand, setting a positive example as a role model within the school. Joshua Michael MacBurnie
Joshua is a high-achieving student at St. Mary’s Education Centre/Academy and is known for his impressive academic record and volunteer contributions to the school. He has been an active member of the school basketball and softball teams and served as the statistician for the Senior Boys’ Basketball Team this year. As the co-creator and co-leader of the Anime and Gaming Club, Joshua fosters a welcoming environment for fellow students who share similar interests. He also volunteers with the school lunch program and helps younger students on his bus. Congratulations, Joshua!

Miley Elizabeth Hanley
Miley is a very skilled French Immersion student who has also found time to serve as a lead Nova Scotia International Student Program Ambassador and is an instrumental member of the Share and Care Committee, a school committee which supports local families in need. She is also an active member of the Winter Carnival committee and the Techsploration Group and has contributed to the SRCE Regional Student Advisory Committee. Miley’s extra-curricular contributions at the community level include serving as a leader of Sparks and Embers; she is a long-standing member of The Girl Guides of Canda and a volunteer with Port Hawkesbury Recreation. Miley has also generously given her time coaching youth through Can-Skate Canada for many years. Congratulations, Miley!
Allie Elizabeth MacIntyre
Allie consistently embodies a model student while balancing academic achievement and school community involvement at SAERC. In addition to her strong academic record, she is the co-editor of the SAERC Yearbook and a valuable member of many committees and teams, including Softball, Operation Share and Care, Winter Carnival, SAERC Media and the Options and Opportunities Program. In the community, Allie volunteers with the Town of Port Hawkesbury and at the local Nursing Home, as well as being a member of The Girl Guides of Canada and is a leader for Sparks and Embers.
