The Town of Port Hawkesbury has been recognized for going above and beyond in workplace safety.
The 2025 Safety First in Cape Breton Awards were presented at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre May 14th.
Senior Director of Safety with Nova Scotia Power Peter Murray gave out two awards.
The town won in the Outstanding Health and Safety Committee Category.
In a statement, Water Resources Development Project Manager at Landrie Lake Water Utility with the Town of Port Hawkesbury Jason MacMillan said, “We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition for our Occupational Health and Safety Committee.”
MacMillan added, “This award is a testament to our team’s dedication and collaboration in fostering a safe, healthy workplace. It reflects our commitment to protecting employees and continuously improving our safety practices.”
The other winner was James Buick who is a physiotherapy/occupational therapy aide at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Shannex in Sydney. Buick picked up the Young Advocate Award.
Buick said, “This award makes me feel that my hard work is appreciated and my efforts to create a safe and healthy environment have not gone unnoticed. Prioritizing safety ensures not only high-quality care for our residents but also a welcoming environment that feels like home.”
With six potential categories, the awards are presented annually to individuals, businesses and committees at the Safety First in Cape Breton Symposium – the only event of its kind on the Island.
