If you live in the town of Antigonish, your property taxes are going up.
The residential tax rate is going up 17 cents, to $1.30 per $100 of capped assessment.
The commercial rate is going up 25 cents to $2.90.
The budget includes more than $16 million in revenue and $22 million to spend on projects, according to a news release from the town.
The town says they had to raise the rate because of inflation and mandatory payments went up for the education system.
They also need to upgrade aging water and sewer systems and to modernize the power grid.
Although the tax rate is going up, the town says they’ve increased the tax exemption. The maximum income for an exemption went up from $28,510 to $35,000.
“This year’s budget is about more than numbers. It’s about protecting the services our
residents rely on and making smart investments in the future of our Town,” said Mayor
Sean Cameron. “We made a difficult decision, but one grounded in responsible leadership
and long-term vision.”
