The province is adding 144 child care spaces to Antigonish county.
The spaces are split between two locations, with 104 spaces going to a new child-care centre on the St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) campus, in the Town of Antigonish, according to news releases from Monday.
At the StFX location, a building will be removed to make the new child-care centre, which the university will run and maintain. The school will later have a public process to select the child-care service provider, the province says.
“The university is delighted to work with the Province to support access to child care for families living in local communities as well as for students, faculty and staff at StFX. StFX continues to play an important role in many communities along northern Nova Scotia,” wrote Andy Hakin, President and Vice-Chancellor of StFX.
The province says 40 Francophone seats will go to a new centre on the same property as the CSAP Pomquet Acadian School, about 12 kilometres east of the Town of Antigonish.
It will be run by Le Centre d’appui à la petite enfance de la Nouvelle-Écosse, and the province contributed $3.5 million to the centre, according to the release.
Funding for both new child-care centres comes from a partnership between the province and the feds. Our newsroom has reached out to the province for a breakdown of the funds for both centres.
