An update on the pilot hurt in a helicopter crash while fighting an out-of-control wildfire in Annapolis County.
The aircraft crashed into shallow water on Five Finger Lake at around 4 pm Friday.
The Department of Natural Resources stated in a news release that the pilot was conscious and talking to first responders and by 6 p.m., was taken in to be medically assessed.
Director of Fleet and Forest Protection Jim Rudderham stated during a news conference on Saturday that he was happy to say the pilot is doing well.
“It was a very difficult day for everyone fighting wildfires in the province. At the same time, I am very proud of how everyone reacted to the helicopter incident. We make sure every day to ensure our people are safe, and yesterday certainly showed that the work we do is dangerous.”
The department says out of respect for privacy, they will not be revealing his name at this time.
Rudderham added that there wasn’t much more he could add and that they aren’t releasing more details until the incident can be fully investigated.
“Firefighters are back at it today, but morale is high,” Rudderhame added.
He said more information will be revealed as they receive it.
