What is likely a welcome relief to many; the evacuation order has been lifted for the rest of the residents affected by the Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County.
Residents can go home September 20 and are expected to arrive at the 484 Morse Road checkpoint with a valid piece of ID to prove their address.
Re-entry will be in a phased approach:
– beginning at 9 a.m. 4957 to 5535 West Dalhousie Rd., 1971 to 2708 Thorne Rd. and all of Heartland Road and Medicraft Lane
– beginning at 10 a.m. 4527 to 4868 West Dalhousie Rd. and 47 to 265 Morse Rd.
“I am thankful to hear that all the remaining evacuees will be returning to their community over the weekend. I can only imagine the relief families are feeling after being told they can come home,” said Kim Masland, Minister of Emergency Management.
“We know that 20 families will be returning and figuring out their next steps. For those who have lost their homes, my heart goes out to you. Please know the Province and the county are here to support you through this time.”
Barricades will remain in place to allow only residents to get through with Thorne Road remaining closed from civic address 2762 to 3408.
Residents are also advised to:
– drive with caution as fire crews may still be working in the area
– be aware of air quality advisories and limit exposure if sensitive to smoke
– check the home for damage before re-entering
– residents should remain prepared to evacuate should fire behaviour change.
A state of local emergency remains in place in Annapolis County, with the active wildfire zone barricaded off.
The Long Lake wildfire broke out August 13, forcing hundreds to evacuate, destroying 20 homes and it now remains held at 8,468 hectares.
