The doors have opened for 17 affordable housing units.
Colleen Cameron, Board Chair for the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society tells our newsroom the second phase of Appleseed Court had residents move in at the beginning of August.
The first phase of 12 units and a community room were already completed.
The new 17 units feature energy efficient standards with efficient appliances, insulation, heat pumps and solar panels.
“We’re trying to make a net zero,” explains Cameron. “We’re still working on that, but that’s a big part of our vision is to be environmentally sustainable, as well as socially and financially sustainable.”
They also include four barrier free units for people who use wheelchairs.
The official grand opening is happening on Friday, October 17 at 3 p.m. at 25 Appleseed Drive in the Sr. Marion Sheridan Community Room through the side doors.
Future plans
According to Cameron, the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society is hoping to create 150 units over 10 years.
They would like to start with just over 50 units in the first phase that could open in the fall of 2027.
“So, in two years from now that we would have tenants coming in,” says Cameron.
Applications for the upcoming units should open in early 2027.
The Society is pleased with all the support people in the community give to help them build these new units as there’s still a huge need for affordable housing.
