Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has charged a retired RCMP officer with sexual assault following an investigation into allegations spanning both his service and retirement years.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) announced that retired Sgt. Darrell W. Johnson faces three counts of sexual assault.
The charges relate to incidents involving a woman known to him.
The investigation included work by both SiRT and the RCMP’s Street Crime Enforcement Unit and Interview Assistance Team. SiRT says it found reasonable grounds to believe that Johnson committed the offences.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court on November 13. While details about when and where the alleged incidents occurred were not released, they are expected to be discussed during court proceedings.
In a statement, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Dennis Daley called the charges “deeply troubling and understandably distressing” for the communities the RCMP serves.
He said the force remains committed to integrity and accountability, adding that “our members are expected to uphold — and surpass — the high standards rightly demanded by Canadians.”
Johnson joined the RCMP in Nova Scotia in 2002 and retired in November 2023.
