VON is a national not-for-profit charitable organization delivering home care and community support services.
They now have an office in St. Peter’s that serves Richmond County area. One of the services they provide is delivering frozen meals to seniors, people with disabilities or those who aren’t able to do their own grocery shopping and/or cook for themselves. Clients are given several frozen meal options to choose from as well as special dietary items available.
There is a fee of $6.00/meal and they can be picked up or delivered for free.
VON programs run primarily on volunteers to help operations run smoothly. They are currently seeking volunteers for the Richmond County – Frozen Meals on Wheels program, more specifically volunteer drivers.
Below are the duties that would be needed from volunteers:
-
One route weekly on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings (currently looking for drivers for the Thursday route)
Wednesdays: Louisdale, Isle Madame East & West
Thursdays: L’Ardoise, Johnstown & St. Peters
- 2-4 hour shifts (depending on length of route, weather, traffic, etc.)
- Kilometer Reimbursement
Drivers would go to the St. Peters office, pack the already prepared/packaged meals in cooler bags, load the bags into their vehicle and deliver them directly to the client’s doorstep, ensure clients receive a brief wellness check in the process, and return to the office in St. Peters with the cooler bags and/or any undelivered meals.
To qualify for a volunteer driver position, VON requires all successful applicants to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Criminal Record Check) at your local RCMP station, process a valid driver’s license and a properly insured vehicle.
