A report on policing for the Municipality of the County of Richmond was presented at last night’s regular meeting of council.
Sergeant Ed Nugent conducted the presentation and outlined crime and traffic enforcement for this year.
A total of 2,368 police files were issued this year 75 of them resulting in criminal charges along with 387 summary offence tickets for traffic violations. 115 traffic stops were conducted, and one impaired driver was caught in a check stop.
The county does have an issue with people littering and there are plans to step up enforcement. Nugent’s presentation stated that there is a fine under the Nova Scotia Environment Act of over $400 for people caught littering. Some of the solutions brought up include putting trash cans in problem areas and putting up signs to remind people of the consequences of littering.
The police force is currently in good shape with 11 operational officers and six working police vehicles. Despite the low recruitment across the country Nugent is confident that they have a good team in the county.
