A Halifax councillor says Dutch Village Road in Halifax will be a wonderful street when it reopens Friday evening, after a major overhaul that snarled up traffic for eight months.
Kathryn Morse tells Acadia News it was a $10 million disruption but a fantastic improvement.
“It needed a lot of work. It was never built properly and hadn’t been well maintained,” says Morse.
She says it will still be a two-way street but with a new sidewalk on the west side, with parallel parking spaces and proper bus stops.
“It’s vastly improved and will be much more comfortable to move through,” adds Morse.
Impact on businesses
The work on Dutch Village has been difficult for business owners.
Morse says they knew it was coming but had a greater impact than anticipated.
“There was a lot of warning, but still, I think the interruption was more extensive than many expected and it certainly has been difficult,” explains Morse.
However, she expects businesses to improve in the next year or so.
“We have some large housing projects that are going to be wrapping up in the next year or so. There’ll be more people moving into the neighborhoods and it’ll be easier to get around,” adds Morse.
Dutch Village Road reopens at 6 p.m.
