The Nova Scotia government is postponing their deadline for $10/day childcare just weeks before the promised launch date.
MLA Brendan Maguire claims the reasoning is that more funding from the federal government is needed in order to fulfill the $605 million agreement that was originally promised back in 2021.
“We’ve put in an incredible amount of money in ourselves as a province, and we’re leading the country in new childcare creation space,” Maguire says, but childcare advocates are worried about the delays.
CCPA-NS director Christine Saulnier says, “The province committed to building a universal public good. If we stay the course and follow the evidence, Nova Scotia can build a high-quality early learning and childcare system. Any detour risks depriving children of the opportunities they deserve.”
Maguire says that there is a meeting with other provincial and territory officials to assess the situation, but that they will not be hitting their original deadline of March 31st, 2026.
