A 37-year-old man is in the hospital after he was shot for allegedly threatening an officer with a knife.
Halifax police got a call around 4:10 p.m. about a robbery at the NSLC at 1616 Grafton Street. Staff said the suspect had sprayed a sensory irritant as he left the store, according to a news release.
Officers were called to another liquor store robbery at about 4:40 p.m., this time at 6169 Quinpool Road. Staff reported again that the suspect sprayed a sensory irritant as he left.
Police then found the man on Quinpool Road. They tried to arrest him, but then he threatened the officers with a large knife, according to the release.
One officer fired a taser at the man, “but it was ineffective,” the release says. Another officer then shot him.
The 37-year-old man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
As of about 8 p.m., Quinpool Road, between Vernon Street and Monastery Lane, is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Halifax police reported the case to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which investigates all cases of serious injury or assault by police officers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
