Lobster fishing vessels with the Maritime Fishermen’s Union Inc. will see upgrades thanks to a joint investment from the province and feds.
Four hundred thousand dollars from the Atlantic Fisheries Fund will go towards installing live-well systems, automatic lobster banders, canopy extensions and lobster sorting tables.
The investment will benefit fishers in the Southeastern Northumberland Strait, Eastern Cape Breton and Southwest Nova.
“The quality of Nova Scotia lobster is known worldwide, and that’s why the product remains in such high demand. The Atlantic Fisheries Fund supports innovative ways to harvest, process and deliver local high-quality, sustainably sourced fish and seafood. The funding announced today builds the region’s international reputation for unmatched quality, and supports new handling and holding technologies aboard vessels when the product is at its peak of freshness.” – Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Joyce Murray
The investment is part of a seven year commitment to provide $400 million through the Atlantic Fisheries Fund to support the fish and seafood sector.
The federal government covers 70% of the fund while the Atlantic provinces cover the other 30%.
