A local councillor says he’s seen the response to COVID-19 first-hand, and he believes government officials are handling it the right way.
Neil DeCoff, who represents District 3 in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, says he was in Florida for his yearly trip south, but decided to cut it short by two weeks due to growing concerns about the virus.
He arrived back in Halifax March 17.
DeCoff tells The Hawk he was screened, given information, and told to go straight home- and stay there for two weeks- when he landed.
“That’s left up to individuals, and it’s always, maybe, harder for people who don’t show the symptoms, but you still could be carrying the virus- that’s the scary part,” he said. “For ourselves, we just said ‘No- we’re going to quarantine’, (which) means we don’t see our kids and our grandkids for another 14 days.”
DeCoff says following the recommendations of public health officials is the best way to slow the spread of the disease.
Patty Hajdu, the federal health minister, enacted the Quarantine Act Wednesday, which requires travellers returning to the country to self-isolate for 14 days.
