This will be the second weekend without public Catholic Church services in the Quad Counties.
All public weekday and weekend masses in the Diocese of Antigonish have been suspended due to COVID-19 concerns.
That has led some pastors to take their services online, via Facebook Live.
Fr. Donald MacGillivray, a spokesperson for the diocese, tells The Hawk it’s important in these uncertain times.
“For those who come to church every weekend, it is in many ways the bedrock of their life- (it’s) very important, the practice of their faith,” he says. “This is not the same thing, but it’s a pretty good alternative.”
MacGillivray says plans are being made for the upcoming Holy Week and Easter services.
He says that includes his own parish, Saint Ninian Cathedral Parish in Antigonish.
“It will be the initiative of individual pastors,” he says. “For me, personally, I’m still working out how to best do that.”
MacGillivray says he doesn’t know an exact number, but he believes a handful of pastors live-streamed their services the first weekend without public masses.
He says it will be up to each individual pastor to decide if they want to join in for the second weekend.
