The premier says workers who come into Cheticamp to take part in the fishing industry must follow the same self-isolation rules as any other out-of-province worker.
Concerned residents in the small Inverness Co. community had said fishery workers were arriving from other provinces and countries for the upcoming lobster and snow crab seasons, and not following self-isolation or physical distancing directives because they’re considered essential.
They said a COVID-19 outbreak would overwhelm their remote community.
During Tuesday’s daily news conference, Stephen McNeil said they must self-isolate.
“That was always the case if someone was coming into work in our province, whether it was in fishery or agriculture,” he said. “Potentially there was a misunderstanding, people confusing someone on a boat and those in fishing plants (and) processing plants- if you’re coming into our province, regardless of where you’re coming from, we expect you to self-isolate for the 14 days.”
McNeil said every out-of-province worker is expected to follow public health guidelines to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
