Officials with a local municipality say they’re trying to fill the gap left by school food programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Keith MacDonald, the chief administrative officer of Inverness Co., says children who rely on school breakfast programs aren’t getting the support they need at this point.
MacDonald tells The Hawk they reached out to their counterparts with the Strait Regional Centre for Education and the breakfast program’s SchoolsPlus volunteers.
“The breakfast program for kids was something that was identified as a service that a number of families really depended on.”
MacDonald says municipal employees and SchoolsPlus volunteers delivered 130 baskets of food to family members of kids in need.
He says they only planned one run, but they’ll do another if schools- and school breakfast programs- remain shut down as a result of the provincial state of emergency.
