Six former premiers, from the three major parties, have come together to release a joint statement of condolences and support for the province, following the worst mass shooting in Canadian history.
Roger Bacon, Donald Cameron, Russell MacLellan, John Hamm, Rodney MacDonald, and Darrell Dexter signed the letter, released Thursday.
Former Premier Rodney MacDonald says this kind of non-partisan message is unprecedented, but these are unprecedented times.
MacDonald tells The Hawk they felt residents, healthcare and emergency workers, and political leaders all would benefit from a non-partisan message of support.
“We felt the need to be engaged and be involved, and this was our small part to play,” he says. “As former politicians and former premiers, we usually stay fairly quiet when it comes to the issues of the day, but this is one where Nova Scotians, we felt, needed to hear a message from us.”
MacDonald says, in times like this, it’s even more important for politicians of all stripes to work together to solve problems.
