Some local lobster fishers are staging a protest at the Canso Causeway Monday.
The president of the Gulf Nova Scotia Bonafide Fishermen’s Association says their members are protesting the delay of their lobster fishing season.
Federal officials delayed the season, which was scheduled to open Thursday, due to COVID-19 concerns until May 15.
Duane Boudreau, the association’s president, tells The Hawk he expects between 70 and 100 members will take part in the three-or-four-hour demonstration, which is scheduled to get underway at 12 p.m.
Boudreau says they have no intention to block traffic, and RCMP have been notified of their plans.
He says demonstrators will practice physical distancing by remaining at least six feet apart.
Boudreau has said their members are upset because they wanted a financial aid package to stay off the water amid the COVID-19 pandemic; instead, federal officials delayed their season by two weeks while other lobster fishing areas remain open.
