The MP for Cape Breton-Canso says COVID-19 is going to have a significant impact on our summer tourism season and tourism operators.
Mike Kelloway says federal officials realized most funding programs didn’t cover tourism business owners, so they recently gave blanket funding to reps with regional development organizations for anyone who doesn’t qualify for any other program.
Kelloway told The Hawk Morning Show they’re trying to make sure the industry survives.
“The idea here is to triage everyone as effectively as we can to get through it, and try to remain whole as we do,” he said. “There’s no doubt about it- the tourism season of (2019) will not be like the tourism season (of 2020).”
Kelloway said many, including operators and himself, are concerned about the future.
He said federal officials are working to get as many businesses as possible through the summer of 2020 so they can re-open in 2021.
