The mayor of Antigonish says it’s not clear when ice will be put back into the Antigonish Arena.
Laurie Boucher says members of the arena board will discuss it when they meet July 27.
After July’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Boucher said there will have to be demand for ice in the facility, which is owned jointly by Antigonish town and county.
“I do know of some people that are travelling to Halifax for ice time,” she said. “We’ll see how things turn out, and see what the demand is there for it.”
The ice was removed in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring.
Boucher said any potential re-opening will have to be done with safety in mind.
“You have to have a plan to be able to open safely- that’s for any entity,” she said. “If you’re a commercial business, if you’re the school or the university, you have to have a plan that says you can open safely, so it’d be no different for the arena.”
The facility’s manager says it would take a week to put ice back in and be ready to go.
