The mayor of Antigonish says she’s very disappointed.
RCMP sanctioned 13 people in relation to gatherings in the town.
They say they responded to noise complaints, house parties with more than 10 people, and large gatherings of students on town streets Friday and Saturday.
After September’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, the town’s mayor, said things have been going well, but this shows there’s more work to do.
“We are very disappointed about the number of fines that were issued this weekend, the gathering sizes of most of the people, and the noise.”
Four StFX students- three in September and one in August- were previously fined for not self-isolating upon their return to the community.
Boucher said recent events notwithstanding, overall, the majority of people are following the rules.
“As bad as it was, it wasn’t as bad as other years,” she said. “Although we did have some parties, I can’t say that it was a regular September Friday in Antigonish.”
Boucher said it’s not the time to let our guard down; we must remain vigilant.
She said police and bylaw enforcement officers will be on duty again to enforce public health measures next weekend.
