A local Lions Club official says they cannot donate the way they did before COVID-19.
Canso Lions Club Publicity Chair Ray White says their chief goal is fundraising, and that’s become incredibly challenging due to the pandemic.
White tells The Hawk all charitable groups are facing the same challenges, so they are all running just a few different types of fundraisers.
“The most notable impact is that many of the fundraising projects, which in involve large crowds, we can’t do that anymore,” he says. “Revenue streams, in a lot of areas, have evaporated.”
White says they are lucky they can still rely on their TV bingo.
He says it’s more important than ever to support community groups.
“That certainly poses a challenge because, the Lions Club, whatever money they generate they donate back to help people in the community, particularly during the difficult time that we’re going through now.”
He says the club itself is not in trouble, but they have needed to cut their charitable contributions.
