The executive director of the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce says it’s more than the obviously connected business owners who will feel the impact of Air Canada‘s suspended Sydney routes.
Misty MacDonald says already hard-hit tourism operators are going to feel the loss.
MacDonald tells The Hawk there are many more small business owners who rely on the airport.
“The thing about a regional airport like that (is) it works in a larger system, so definitely the ripple effects will be felt,” she says. “There’s really a big, far-reaching impact when a major operation like that has to shut down temporarily.”
MacDonald says all business owners who rely on travellers will be affected.
She says some who might not even seem connected will feel the impact as well.
“Some of those things are going to be things that people don’t even think about,” she says. “The small businesses that actually the airport supports, with even their advertising or printing needs, etc.”
MacDonald says the loss of the Air Canada routes to the J.A. Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport is a major blow to the entire region, including the Quad Counties.
