Antigonish Co.‘s warden says members of the StFX campus community have done very well when it comes to COVID-19.
University officials confirmed two cases on campus in the past week; both were students who returned from outside the Atlantic region after the holiday break.
After January’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the warden of the municipality, said StFX reps established a solid plan- with the help of public health officials- when students returned in the summer.
“They followed that right through the whole fall season, and then starting into the new semester, obviously they were ready, they set up for isolation,” he said. “We’re very confident that the university is doing all the right things, along with public health guidance.”
McCarron said he’s spoken to Andy Hakin, the university’s president, and he’s been told the two infected students- and all returning students- are isolating, with meals and other essentials brought to their rooms.
He said he’s confident in what’s being done to handle the cases and limit the virus’ spread.
“They followed the protocols and they’re isolating as they should,” he said. “Public health has done the contact tracing and the work that way.”
McCarron said he’s not surprised we’ve had the odd case, but overall StFX- and the entire province- have done an exceptional job in the fight against COVID-19.
