The province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health says recently announced Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine delivery delays shouldn’t seriously affect the province’s strategy.
Doctor Robert Strang says they have been holding vaccine in reserve to ensure a second shot within the manufacturer recommended 21-day window.
Doctor Strang says the provincial COVID-19 vaccination strategy is flexible enough to deal with the ups and downs of supply.
“We’ve got a very solid process in place that we can ramp up or ramp down depending on if there’s variations in vaccine supply, so if we get a little bit less vaccine in the next few weeks, we can adjust our clinics to accommodate that,” he says. “On the flip side, if we get, all of a sudden, a large increase in vaccine we have processes now where we can very quickly ramp up our program.”
Doctor Strang says staff have administered, or set aside for second shots, nearly 13,000 does so far, and have 10,000 more for next week.
He announced two new cases Friday, both in close contacts of previously reported cases, one each in Northern Zone and Central Zone. There are 32 active infections remaining in the province.
