The mayor of Antigonish says the return of students to StFX has gone well.
Students started returning for the winter semester in early January.
There were three COVID-19 cases among students from outside the Atlantic region; those three students have since recovered.
After January’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, said she’s happy with how those cases were managed and reported.
“We’re pleased with the transparency that StFX has had with the community,” she said. “To date, they haven’t held anything back.”
Boucher said it’s a different set of circumstances compared to when students returned in August- there are higher case numbers in other provinces this time around.
She said the three StFX cases did create some fear.
“We have a lot of people in our community that are very vulnerable- they’re elderly or (have) underlying conditions- and people are nervous, and I completely understand,” she said. “We’re happy that the cases have been resolved without community spread.”
Boucher said they’re cautiously optimistic.
She said they’ll consider it a success if they get through the next few weeks with few-to-no cases.
