A shipment of 30,000 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is arriving in Nova Scotia today.
Premier Iain Rankin says this is the largest shipment the province has received.
Rankin says that with more vaccines arriving, they will be ramping up their distribution.
“As we receive more supply of vaccine, we’ll be scaling up this rollout,” said Rankin. “We’ll be ramping up through April with a goal of having 200 pharmacies distributing the vaccine by the end of that month.”
In addition to the 10 community vaccination clinics, booking for vaccination opened today for those 80 and older at 15 pharmacies across the province.
The province plans to vaccinate 86,000 people per week starting in mid May. They expect to cycle through the five year age blocks on a weekly basis. In early April clinics will also start vaccinating people in shelters.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Doctor Robert Strang thanked Nova Scotians for their trust.
“I deeply appreciate that Nova Scotians have put their trust in me through all the ups and downs of the pandemic to date,” said Strang. “The approach that we have taken has been based on what’s good for Nova Scotia and so far we have fared well.”
One new case of COVID-19 is being reported in the province today. The case is in the Eastern Zone and is related to travel outside of Nova Scotia.
There are now 21 active cases of COVID-19 province wide.
